ENVIRONMENT
Besides education, another cause that we are passionate about is the environment. In UMW, we are committed to balancing the need for financial and economic growth with our responsibility to protect our natural environment. Our Philosophy & Approach for Environmental cause are as follows:
- Awareness, education and knowledge sharing as the first step.
- Regular monitoring and tracking of the direct impact of our operations.
- Continuously enhance energy efficiency and promote better management of resources.
- Adopt international environmental standards for our Environmental Education Programmes.
In line with our CSR commitment as well as Philosophy & Approach under this pillar, UMW organised a few environmental activities such as:-
- Mud Ball Making Programme
Held at Environmental Interpretive Centre (EIC) Sepang in 2016, 40 of UMW SL1M (Program Skim Latihan 1 Malaysia) trainees managed to produce more than 1,000 mud balls. Mud balls are made from a mixture of mud, brown sugar, water, paddy husk and effective microorganisms and purportedly contain properties that will purify water, improve water quality and solve sanitation problems. The mud balls produced were used at the UMW Shah Alam Trees For Life programme.
- Trees For Life
Trees For Life is a tree planting programme which gives opportunity for UMW Community Champions to contribute directly to mother nature by planting more trees. In 2016, UMW once again participated in Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam’s (MBSA) “Shah Alam Trees For Life” for the fourth consecutive years. Approximately 500 trees were planted by the volunteers around the area of Taman Lembah Bukit SUK, Seksyen 5, Shah Alam. In addition to that, 1000 mud balls which were made earlier by UMW SL1M trainees were thrown into the lake. As at 31 December 2016, UMW had planted 11,700 trees through our CSR programme.
- Mangrove Trees Planting Programme
Another tree planting programme organised by UMW was the UMW 2016 Mangrove Tree Planting at Sungai Pelek, Sepang which was collaborated with Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS), Pejabat Daerah /Tanah Sepang, Jabatan Hutan Negeri Selangor, Avani Sepang Gold Coast and several villages near Sepang. To date, UMW has planted 5,800 mangrove trees under the environmental pillar.
Toyota Eco Youth
The Toyota Eco Youth Programme (TEY) is a collaborative effort between UMW Toyota Motor and the Ministry of Education to cultivate environmental awareness and encourage respect for the environment among youth in secondary schools. The first TEY took place in 2001 and since then has grown in leaps and bounds to become a nation-wide school environment-awareness programme with a rich legacy.
The TEY is a six-month long event, based on an inter-school competition concept. Sixteen secondary schools, selected from a list of schools compiled by the Ministry of Education, will each send a team to participate in this competition. The teams are tasked with identifying an environmental problem within their respective communities, analysing the causes of the issue or problem, providing suggestions on counter-measures to overcome the identified problem and setting a standard and control procedure to ensure the results achieved are sustainable.
The solutions implemented will be subjected to an on-site judging by UMW Toyota Motor. The successful team will be the one that displays a high calibre of understanding and appreciation of the issue and would have been able to demonstrate, through analysis, research and action programme, effective and sustainable ways as well as means of overcoming the issue.
Before the teams begin the task of identifying environmental problems in their communities, they will participate in a basic workshop and training programme on problem solving methodology using Toyota’s QC Problem-solving Procedure. During the workshop the teams will learn Toyota’s “Problem-solving Action-oriented Approach”, which they will then utilise when devising solutions to the identified environmental problems in their communities.
